• Vice President’s
Visit Illustrates Washington’s control over Barbour •
(Jackson) In response to the fundraiser today for Republican gubernatorial
candidate Haley Barbour, headlined by Vice-President Dick Cheney on
the Coast, Mitch Tyner offered the following:
“I respect the Vice President immensely. However, he never contacted
this fellow Republican to determine whose views are most consistent
with his own. I am certain that my pro-life position, position on the
United Nations, opposition to homosexual marriages, immigration, parenting
and other social issues are much more in line with the Party platform
than my opponents lobbying history.” Says Tyner.
“Washington wants to run Mississippi and they know they can do
it through my opponent. Cheney’s visit and his complete indifference
to my views are evidence of the anticipated payback and outside influence
which will forever follow Barbour wherever he goes,” according
to Tyner. “If he spends $10,000,000.00 on this race, as he’s
promised, Washington and the special interests will want a $100 BILLION
return on their investment. Mississippi cannot afford that and Mississippi
is not for sale,” said Tyner.
In recent weeks Barbour’s tainted lobbying history, as well as
his failure to stand up for family values have been coming out. “He
[Barbour] was paid over $5,000,000.00 by the tobacco industry, then
Barbour used his “connections” to return the favor with
a $50 BILLION gift to the tobacco industry in the balance budget act
of 1997. Now that’s a return on investment,” concludes Tyner.
